Dear Alexandria,

I’m not really sure how to write to you any more. It feels simultaneously like a moment and a millennium ago that we last had whatever it was we had. I’ve done my best to scrub my life of your slender apparition but I never seem to be able to catch every last mark, every scratch, every gouge in my mind that your opalescent pink fingernails used to dig into. Your ghost won’t leave me alone. It appears from every landmark, every song on the radio. Every story I tell has your name in it and I am sure the people around me are even more tired of hearing about it than I am. It makes me angry.

I met a man today that told me a story about his younger days. He was a magnificent storyteller and got himself lost in his own details, detailing adventures of his wayward youth, echoing cars broken down on the sides of busy highways and nights spent on hardwood floors in strangers’ kitchens. His fervor was admirable, and the detail of his mischief was crystal clear, but I noticed he didn’t speak at length about his compatriots. They seemed to be lost to the howling winds of memory, their faces blurred by seconds ticking away.

I came across a picture of your pretty face on my computer yesterday and I had to delete it before I opened it against my best judgement.

I don’t want to remember your face, because a ghost with no face has no eyes that I have to remember.

I hope my ghost comes back to haunt you some day.

I drew this aborted portrait a few months ago for a pretty girl in Edmonton. I don’t particularly like the drawing, especially the facial details. I don’t know what’s going on there, with the ear. It’s not pretty. But I do like my cheesy attempt to replicate the ol’ Polar Coordinates filter on paper. I think I should stick to drawing cartoons–my attempts at portraiture or relative realism never turn out well.
